The story tracks his anticipated arrivals and heartfelt departures; invites us into the hotels in which he stayed and practised before his public performances; paints the picture of enthusiastic crowds scrambling for tickets and cheering on the pianist whenever he made an appearance; and enchants us with the music that can almost be heard when reading about the pianist’s virtuosity and the truly unique atmosphere of the concert halls. It reports on Paderewski’s interactions with representatives of the esteemed social and political circles of the time, and makes reference to his many press interviews in which he gave his thoughts on the young country he was travelling through.
Interestingly, the book captures the lesser known side of Paderewski – the curious tourist who wanted to witness and discover the sheer beauty of New Zealand, “where nowhere in the world he has seen as many shades of green”. His serendipitous holiday spent in the thermal regions of the central North Island in November 1904 fuelled his genuine interest in a land shaped by volcanism and geothermal activities. His fascination with Māori culture and customs and the genuine friendship he developed with the people set a scene for a remarkable private concert where Paderewski himself became, “a pianist amidst the geysers”.
The story concludes with the examining of Paderewski’s imprint on New Zealand’s music scene, and ponders the influence his concert tours had on the nation’s social life. As the fruits of such events ripen slowly in the silence of people’s hearts, we are left to determine for ourselves the legacy of Paderewski’s visits.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jacek Roman Drecki – a devoted Pole and a proud New Zealander. His early fascination with natural landscapes and the intricacies of Earth’s terrain, led him to discover that in order to understand what one sees it is necessary to look deeper. This principle sets the tone for everything he does. Whether it is the study of glacial movements in the Arctic or identifying volcanic lava flows on Mt Ruapehu, understanding these processes is the key goal of his inquiries.
No differently does Jacek approach another of his interests – tracing Polish footprints in New Zealand. With his curious mind, he sets out to bring the story of the famous Polish pianist to life. 'My Colourful Life' tells the remarkable story of an ordinary Polish woman whose life became entangled in the world changing events of World War II. Thoughtful, moving and uplifting, this account is a testimony to the strength of the human spirit as it demonstrates the unparalleled optimism and persistent hope of a young girl far from home.
The story begins with Wanda’s recollection of living with her loving family in the peaceful village of Maczki Wołyńskie in eastern Poland, and the hard but gratifying work they busied themselves with on the family farm. However, the outbreak of World War II soon threatens the family’s serene existence, and on one fearful night in February, 1940, Wanda’s life, as well as the lives of all those whom she loved, is turned upside down. Her family fell victim to the Soviet deportation of Poles into the Russian far North. She survived two years of imprisonment in a gulag (labour camp) and the long hunger and death stricken journey that followed, across war-raged Russia to the relative safety of Persia (Iran). The ordeal claimed the lives of her younger sister, uncle and father, while her mother and older sister became trapped in Russia. Only Wanda, then aged fourteen, and her young brother made it to Persia where they found refuge in an orphanage in Isfahan before making the journey to New Zealand.
Arriving in this new land opened a new chapter in Wanda’s life – one that intertwined the joys of her first job, marriage and starting a family with the sorrow of losing her husband and her two daughters… Within these pages is the unique and colourful story of her life.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Wanda Ellis (Helena Wanda nee Pelc) was born on June 4th, 1928, in eastern Poland (now Ukraine). During World War II she was imprisoned by the Soviets and, after her release, made her way through Persia (Iran) to New Zealand. After a temporary stay at the Polish Children’s Camp in Pahiatua, she moved to Auckland in 1945 to continue her education at Baradene College. She attended the Auckland Business College before marrying and adopting four children. For many years she worked in the office of St Peter’s College, finally retiring in 1988. Wanda Ellis remains one of the most distinguished members of the Polish community in Auckland, receiving amongst other honours the Queen’s Service Medal in 2015. Sadly, after a period of deteriorating health, Wanda passed away peacefully on the morning of 7 October, 2017. She was an extraordinarily positive woman and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Niniejszy wybór wierszy pozwala nie tylko „usłyszeć” wołanie „serca na drogach życia”, ale daje również interesujący wgląd w życie patriotycznie zorientowanej Polonii nowozelandzkiej, której autorka była wybitną przedstawicielką.
O AUTORCE
Malwina Zofia (Wisia) Schwieters (z domu Rubisz), urodziła się 15 lutego 1931 roku w Sokołowie, w powiecie rzeszowskim, województwo lwowskie; zmarła w Auckland 6 lutego 2022 roku. Do wybuchu II Wojny Światowej, wraz z rodzicami mieszkała w Nisku, a następnie w Rozwadowie. W pierwszych tygodniach okupacji, w obliczu groźby aresztowania przez Niemców – nie spodziewając się uderzenia Armii Czerwonej ze wschodu – udali się do Lwowa. Jednak już 22 września 1939 roku wkroczyli tam Sowieci. W kwietniu 1940 roku dziewięcioletnia Malwina, wraz z rodzicami i młodszym bratem, została deportowana na Syberię.
Po napaści Niemiec hitlerowskich na Związek Sowiecki w czerwcu 1941 roku, otworzyła się przed w Polakami więzionymi w Sowietach szansa na opuszczenie „nieludzkiej ziemi”. Wraz z armią gen. Andersa wyszedł ojciec Malwiny, Zygmunt Rubisz, a niewiele później ona sama, już tylko z matką (młodszy brat zmarł w Uzbekistanie) i polskim sierocińcem wydostały się do Iranu. Stamtąd, w listopadzie 1944 roku, dotarła do Nowej Zelandii, i razem z kilkusetdziesięciorgiem dzieci została umieszczona w obozie w Pahiatua. Od 1948 roku mieszkała w Auckland.
W Nowej Zelandii Malwina odebrała całe swoje wykształcenie. Ukończywszy studia w 1958 roku wyszła za mąż za Nowozelandczyka, Patryka Schwieters. Malwina należy do grona współzałożycieli Stowarzyszenia Polaków w Auckland i organizacji Solidarność w Nowej Zelandii. Przez wiele lat piastowała funkcję sekretarza Komitetu Pomocy Duszpasterskiej wspierającego pracę polskich kapłanów pracujących w wśród Polaków w Auckland. Jej starania o zachowanie pamięci historii Polski, kultywowanie piękna i czystości języka polskiego oraz umacnianie tożsamości Polaków różnych generacji żyjących na antypodach sprawiła, że w środowisku polonijnym w Auckland nadano jej miano „strażnika pamięci narodowej”.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Fr Tadeusz Dajczer (1931-2009) completed his studies at the Theological Faculty in Warsaw. Later he graduated at the Gregorianum University in Rome with the title of doctor. He was a professor of the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw and the founder of the Families of Nazareth Movement which arose in Poland in 1985. This Movement grew out of a small community which was searching for a way leading to spiritual growth. This book has helped develop the foundations of the group, which soon spread rapidly beyond the borders of Poland.

Black Madonna Comes to New Zealand
On 22nd November, 2001 we celebrated the 15th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's visit to New Zealand. The memories of this historic event are still fresh and the spiritual fruits still appreciated in Catholic communities throughout New Zealand. The Pope's deepest appreciation of the Māori tradition, experienced first-hand during his visit, led to the appointment of Max Takuira Mariu as the first Māori Catholic bishop.
During his apostolic visit in 1986, the Pope presented a special gift “for the Church in New Zealand” – a copy of the “Black Madonna” icon – as a constant reminder of our perpetual link with the Universal Church. This booklet touches on the legend associated with the 'Our Lady of Częstochowa' original icon, and describes the fascinating and often intriguing history of the “Black Madonna” and its Polish shrine. A short chapter dedicated to the story of the New Zealand copy is included.

Bardula’s Emigration Memoirs
Barbara Gdula Wośkowiak
Barbara Gdula Wośkowiak was born on October 11, 1952 in Wrocław, Poland. She grew up in the nearby town Sobótka, where she went to primary school. At the age of 17, for family reasons, she had to interrupt her education at the High School of Economics in Wrocław and moved to Lądek Zdrój. There she took a job as a waitress in a health spa for military personnel. After seven years of work in catering, she obtained a diploma as ‘Master waiter and cook’.
She undertook extramural study to complete her high school and finally graduated in 1980 at the age of 28.
Barbara worked in Poland for almost 13 years, most of it in catering. On 12 December 1981, she took a plane for a holiday in Khartoum, unknowing that the very next day, the communist government would close the borders and declare martial law, to crush the Polish “Solidarity” movement. After joining her husband, who worked in Sudan, they remained abroad. In 1983 they emigrated to New Zealand. Barbara worked in a number of jobs and places in New Zealand and America. She is well known for her involvement in the Polish community in New Zealand, particularly in New Plymouth, Palmerston North and Hawkes Bay.
Barbara’s story links Polish post World War II history, tragic for her family, with the life of Polish emigrants in New Zealand in a lively manner, interwoven with fascinating pieces of her poetry.
Barbara lives now in Rolleston, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Jej sprzeciw wobec systemu wyraził się najdobitniej uczestnictwem w protestach studenckich 1968 roku, a później decyzją wyjazdu na emigrację. Opis lat spędzonych w Austrii dotyczy głównie wydarzeń w życiu prywatnym i zawodowym autorki, zdanej na siebie w obcym kraju. To jakby czas próby charakteru, w którym - obok pracowitości i samodzielności - należało wykazać się również poczuciem humoru, szczególnie w okresie pracy ze zwierzętami w ogrodzie zoologicznym - Safari Park. Ostatnie rozdziały dotyczą okresu po osiedleniu się już w Nowej Zelandii. Tu, obok pełnych anegdot spraw z życia osobistego autorki, pojawia się szersza perspektywa środowiska polonijnego, którego autorka była aktywnym uczestnikiem, kierując przez kilka lat organizacją "Klub Polski" w Auckland.
Ujmującymi strofami poetyckimi, w zamieszczonych w drugiej części książki, autorka daje się poznać, jako osoba pełna wrażliwości, z miłością pochylająca się nad światem i czułą refleksją ogarniająca przemijające życie.
Zarówno wspomnienia jak i poezja autorki, są cennym wkładem na rzecz wypełnienia swego rodzaju luki w literaturze, dotyczącej losów polskich emigrantów urodzonych już po Drugiej Wojnie Światowej.
O AUTORCE
Urodziłam się w Krakowie już po wojnie. Mój ojciec, dentysta, pochodził ze starej, krakowskiej rodziny, a matka, też krakowianka, była nauczycielką w Wilejce na Kresach.
Wychowałam się, wykształciłam i podjęłam pierwszą pracę w rodzinnym mieście. Życie w PRL-owskiej Polsce tamtych czasów było dla mnie wieczną walką o byt, o każdy drobiazg, o pracę na miarę zdolności i o godne, nieskrępowane życie pozazawodowe. Rzeczywistość przygnębiała – długie kolejki po towary, usługi czy załatwienie zwykłych spraw administacyjnych. Z czasem wzbudziło się we mnie marzenie o wyjeździe na Zachód, do Wiednia. Wiedeń, według opowiadań ojca, był ulubionym miastem mojego dziadka Ludwika Korzeniowskiego, który jeździł tam często przed wojną. Dopiero w 1975 roku, po odrobieniu nakazu pracy po studiach i „wystaniu” paszportu, udało mi się wyjechać. Do dziś pamiętam zapach wiedeńskiego dworca kolejowego w dniu przyjazdu, zapach kawy i czystości. Spędziłam w Wiedniu 10 lat. Jako zootechnik pracowałam w Safari Parku w Gansendorfie pod Wiedniem. Osobiste sprawy „przerzuciły” mnie do Auckland w 1984 roku.
Po latach przyszła tęsknota za Polską, młodością, koleżankami, domem rodzinnym, rodzicami. O Nowej Zelandii mówię jako o swoim kraju, tu wychowały się moje dzieci i tu spędziłam najważniejszy okres mojego życia.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I’ve lived in New Zealand for the past thirty years. Leaving my native Poland I took along with me a collection of words and meanings that have since become tangled up in their new antipodean reality. Sometimes when I tried to unravel them they became poetry. My first volume Quiet whispers in between was published in Polish in 2001.
War.com took shape over several years and was first published in Poland in 2013. It is my own response to the growing phenomenon of war as a popular and universal spectacle in our daily lives.

Od trzydziestu lat wraz z rodziną mieszkam w Nowej Zelandii. Wyjeżdżajac z kraju prócz paru niezbędnych rzeczy zabrałem bagaż polskich slów i znaczeń, które od czasu do czasu układam w poezje zaplątane w świat na antypodach. Tak powstał tomik poezji Cichy szept – in between w 2001 roku.
